When To Transition Your Child From Recreational to Competitive Gymnastics
As the parent of a recreational gymnast, you and your child may be considering competition in gymnastics. However, the two sides of gymnastics training can be vastly different, and it’s important to consider all factors before making the decision to begin competing in gymnastics. At Virginia Elite Gymnastics Academy, our team is ready to help our gymnasts achieve their goals, and if you think your child is ready to transition into competitions, here are some factors that may help to make your decision more clear!
Your Child is Passionate about Gymnastics
If your child is especially passionate about gymnastics, they may benefit from the additional training time, challenge, and involvement that comes along with being part of the competitive side of the sport. Passion for the sport is helpful because it will help to keep your child invested, committed, and engaged throughout any difficulties they may encounter while competing.

They’re Ready for New Challenges
If your child’s passion is leading them to new heights in their skills and abilities as a gymnast, they may feel like they’re not being challenged by their recreational challenges. If they feel ready to take on new, more difficult challenges and work toward higher achievements, competitive gymnastics is a great option for them!

They’re Able to Handle a Busy Schedule
While competitive gymnastics is a fun and fulfilling experience to take part in, it’s also incredibly busy, so if your child already has a busy schedule, or struggles with time management, competition will likely be more difficult to handle. If they’re ready to make room in their schedule and commit to the time requirements of competition, it may be time to transition!

You’re Ready to Support Them
One of the most overlooked aspects of transitioning a child from recreational sports to competitive sports is the support necessary from parents and family. Not only will there be additional fees and costs associated with competition, your child will be facing new challenges in the competitive side of the sport and will need emotional and mental support from people they trust, too.
If your child is ready to handle new challenges, can commit to the time requirements of competition, and your family is ready to support them as they embark on a new journey, then competitive gymnastics are a great option.
