Rip Care 101: Prevention and Treatment for Hard-Working Gymnastic Hands
If you have spent any time swinging on the bars at Virginia Elite Gymnastics Academy (VEGA), you know the sting of a “rip.” In the world of competitive gymnastics, these tears in the skin on your palms are often seen as a badge of honor—proof of your hard work. However, they can also be painful and distracting.
Whether you train at our New Kent, Williamsburg, or Topping location, taking care of your hands is essential to staying on the bars and off the sidelines. Here is your guide to keeping your hands competition-ready. Contact us today.

Prevention Starts with Callus Management
Believe it or not, you actually want calluses! They provide a protective layer for your skin during gymnastics classes. However, when calluses get too thick or rough, they are more likely to snag and tear. To prevent this, you should keep your calluses smooth. Use a pumice stone or a sanding block gently after a shower to level out the skin. Never pick at your calluses, as this weakens the healthy skin underneath.

Immediate Treatment: Clean and Cover
When a rip does happen during your gymnastics lessons, immediate action is key. First, wash your hands with soap and water (yes, it will sting!) to prevent infection. Carefully trim any loose flaps of skin with sterilized scissors—never pull the skin, as it will tear further into live tissue.
Once clean, cover the rip with a blister pad or a bandage, and use athletic tape to secure it. Learning how to create a “tape grip” is a vital skill for any student at a gymnastics school.

The Healing Process
Moisture is your friend. At night, apply a healing balm, Vitamin E oil, or an antibiotic ointment to the rip and cover it with a sock or glove to keep the moisture locked in while you sleep. This prevents the rip from drying out and cracking, which is common in gymnastics for kids who are eager to get back on the equipment.
