Gymnastics Gear Guide: What You Need to Get Started
Stepping into your first session at Virginia Elite Gymnastics Academy (VEGA) is an exciting milestone. Whether you are joining us in New Kent, Williamsburg, or Topping, you might be wondering exactly what you need to bring to feel prepared and confident. Unlike many sports that require bags of heavy pads and expensive equipment, recreational gymnastics is beautifully simple to start. As a premier gymnastics school, we prioritize your safety and comfort above all else. Here is your essential guide to gearing up for your beginner gymnastics classes. Contact us today.

The Right Attire: Comfort Meets Safety
In your gymnastics lessons, movement is everything. You need clothing that is form-fitting so it won’t get caught on the bars or beams, and so your coaches can clearly see your form to ensure you are moving safely. For girls, a traditional tank leotard is the gold standard, though many beginners prefer adding a pair of fitted athletic shorts on top. For boys, a snug-fitting T-shirt and athletic shorts (without zippers or buttons) are perfect. Most importantly, gymnastics is performed barefoot! This provides the best grip and stability on our specialized flooring and equipment.

Hair and Accessories: Keeping Focus Sharp
Safety isn’t just about what you wear on your body; it’s also about how you manage the small details. If you have long hair, it must be secured back in a tight ponytail, braid, or bun to keep it out of your eyes and away from the equipment. Avoid using hard plastic clips or headbands that might fall off during a roll. Additionally, please leave all jewelry—especially necklaces and dangling earrings—at home. These simple steps ensure that your only focus during gymnastics for kids is mastering that new skill.

The Gym Bag Essentials
While we provide all the high-quality mats, bars, and beams you’ll need, a small gym bag helps you stay organized. Your most important item is a labeled, spill-proof water bottle; staying hydrated is key to maintaining energy throughout your class. You might also want to pack a small snack for after your session to refuel. As you progress into more advanced recreational gymnastics, you might eventually add items like athletic tape or grips, but for your first day, a bottle of water and a positive attitude are all you truly need
