4 Simple Tumbling Moves To Learn
Starting out in tumbling is an exciting first step into the world of gymnastics for kids! At Virginia Elite Gymnastics Academy (VEGA), we focus on building confidence and strength with foundational skills that are easy to learn and fun to practice. Whether your child is attending their very first tumbling classes for toddlers or joining our recreational gymnastics program, mastering these basic maneuvers is the key to safe and speedy progress.

The Log Roll
The log roll is the simplest, yet most crucial, tumbling exercise for beginners. The goal is to lie flat and roll from side to side without bending the body, keeping arms squeezed to the ears. This movement teaches the concept of body tension—a rigid, tight core necessary for all future skills. For those in tumbling classes for toddlers, this is a fantastic starting point for understanding how to control their body position before moving on to inverted skills like handstands and cartwheels.

The Forward Roll
The forward roll is often the first inverted skill taught in recreational gymnastics and provides the fundamental experience of rotation. We teach athletes to tuck their chin tightly to their chest, push off their feet, and roll over the curved back of their neck and shoulders, not their head.

The Donkey Kick
The donkey kick is an excellent exercise to build upper body strength and prepare students for the handstand and cartwheel. From a squat, the child places their hands on the floor and gently kicks their legs up, keeping them tucked or slightly separated, landing softly on their feet.

The Tripod Headstand
The tripod headstand is a simple, controlled inversion that helps beginners gain balance and confidence while supporting their weight. The gymnast forms a triangle with their hands and the top of their head on a soft mat, slowly walking their feet closer until they can lift their knees onto their elbows.
These four simple tumbling moves are the perfect entry points into recreational gymnastics. They build the foundational strength, body control, and confidence needed to succeed in advanced gymnastics for kids programs. At Virginia Elite Gymnastics Academy (VEGA), we make learning fun and progressive, ensuring every child thrives in our care.
