How To Do a Cartwheel

At Virginia Elite Gymnastics Academy (VEGA), we believe the cartwheel is a foundational skill that builds confidence, coordination, and strength in young athletes. It’s more than just a fun trick; it’s a gateway to more complex tumbling skills. Our experienced coaches guide students through safe and effective progressions, making sure every student feels supported on their gymnastics journey!

Building a Strong Foundation Through Key Body Shapes

Before attempting the full movement, we emphasize the correct body shapes that make the cartwheel achievable. This involves teaching the hollow and arch shapes, which are crucial for maintaining control and stability. We focus on conditioning exercises that strengthen the core and shoulders, preparing the body for the inverted position.

The Essential Steps: Hand Placement and The Lunge

The cartwheel begins with the lunge—a proper starting position that generates momentum and direction. Our technique emphasizes a straight front leg and a high chest, ensuring a powerful push-off. We teach students the critical “hand-hand-foot-foot” sequence, stressing that the hands should land shoulder-width apart and perpendicular to the direction of travel. This step-by-step approach simplifies the skill, making it accessible even for gymnastics for toddlers who are just starting out.

Safety First: Spotting Techniques and Practice Space

Safety is always our top priority. We train our coaches in effective spotting techniques that support the student’s hips and shoulders through the inverted phase. For home practice, we always recommend a safe, open space, ideally with a mat. By creating a secure environment, we reduce hesitation and build the necessary trust for young athletes to push their boundaries safely.

Beyond the Basics: Connecting the Cartwheel to Tumbling

Once the cartwheel is consistent, we immediately show students how it connects to a broader range of tumbling passes and skills. It is an essential component of round-offs and serves as a transition move between complex elements. This is where we begin to introduce rhythm and flow, encouraging students to link movements seamlessly!

The cartwheel is a critical benchmark in any young athlete’s journey. Virginia Elite Gymnastics Academy (VEGA) is committed to providing expert coaching and a supportive environment for every aspiring gymnast. Learn more about our foundational classes and explore our available programs!
